Why eSimphony for Japan
Tested in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and the Shinkansen corridor. Plans run on NTT Docomo, SoftBank, and KDDI — Japan's three majors — with auto-handoff to the strongest signal.
No reinstall, no SIM tray. Your lifetime eSimphony eSIM is already on your phone. Buy a Japan plan, tap activate, you're connected. Faster than walking from your hotel to the konbini.
Moza handles the language. Ask in English, Spanish, French, Vietnamese, anything. She picks the right plan, explains coverage on the Tōhoku Shinkansen, recommends a regional plan if you're heading to Korea or Taiwan after.
Self-healing in metro tunnels. Tokyo's Yamanote line keeps signal in most stations. Some deep-tunnel sections drop, then re-anchor when you surface — Moza handles the reconnection silently.
Coverage and networks
Networks: NTT Docomo, SoftBank, KDDI au, Rakuten Mobile
Japan has some of the best mobile coverage on Earth. 4G/LTE blankets the country. 5G is rolled out across Tokyo, Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo. The Shinkansen network has continuous mobile coverage at speed — your eSIM works at 285 km/h. NTT Docomo has the strongest rural and mountain footprint. Subway tunnels in central Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya have signal in most stations. Some deep tunnels still drop briefly between stations.

Japan travel data tips
- Navigation eats data fast. Tokyo's transit, walking through Shinjuku station, hopping between Kyoto temples — Google Maps and Apple Maps churn through 1–2 GB on a normal week.
- Suica/Pasmo and IC cards run on NFC, not data. You can tap-and-go even with no signal. Topping up via the app does need data.
- Many restaurants require app-based reservations. Pocket Concierge, Tabelog, Toranoko, all require data-on. Don't go SIM-less to a Tokyo trip planning to "wing it."
- Free Wi-Fi exists but is uneven. JR stations, Starbucks, 7-Eleven, and most convenience stores have free Wi-Fi, but coverage drops the moment you leave the door.
- Plug type A, 100 V. Japanese plugs are unpolarized two-prong. US Type A plugs fit; Type B (three-prong with ground) usually does not.
- Heading to Korea, Taiwan, or Vietnam after? Buy an Asia Regional plan — covers Japan + the rest of East and SE Asia in one activation.
Frequently asked questions
Does my eSimphony eSIM work on the Shinkansen?+
Yes. The Tōkaidō, Sanyō, Tōhoku, and most other Shinkansen lines have continuous 4G/LTE coverage at speed. Eastern Hokkaido and far Kyushu have a few rural-tunnel pockets that drop briefly. Your eSIM handles the handoff automatically.
How much data for a week in Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka?+
Most travelers comfortably finish a 7-day Japan trip with 3 GB. If you're hotspotting a laptop, streaming Netflix on the Shinkansen, or doing live translation often, jump to 10 GB or unlimited.
Does the eSIM work on the Tokyo Metro?+
Most stations have signal. Some deep-tunnel sections (parts of Toei Oedo, deeper Hibiya stretches) drop signal between stations and pick it back up at the next stop. Standard for any Japanese SIM.
Can I make calls and send SMS?+
eSimphony plans are data-only. Calls and SMS go through your primary SIM (or use WhatsApp, LINE, FaceTime, iMessage over data). LINE is universal in Japan — you'll want it installed if you're meeting locals.
What about Hokkaido or Okinawa?+
Hokkaido and Okinawa are fully covered. Cities (Sapporo, Naha) are 4G/5G; Hokkaido interior and remote Okinawan islands have weaker but functional 4G — Docomo is best in those areas.
Will my eSimphony Japan plan work on JR trains and the JR Pass?+
Yes — the eSIM works regardless of which train you're on. The JR Pass is a separate ticketing thing; your data plan runs alongside.
Does my eSimphony eSIM expire?+
No. The eSIM profile itself is for life — it stays installed on your phone. Individual data plans (a 7-day plan, for example) have their own validity, but the underlying eSIM doesn't expire. When your next trip comes, just buy a new plan in the app.
Will an eSIM work on my phone?+
Most iPhones from XS onward, most Pixels from 3 onward, and most flagship Samsung Galaxy phones from the S20 onward support eSIM. You also need an unlocked phone. Open the eSimphony app — it detects your device automatically.
Can I keep my regular phone number while using eSimphony?+
Yes. eSimphony runs on a separate eSIM profile, so your primary number stays active on your main SIM. Calls and texts continue as normal, with eSimphony data running alongside.
